LEMONADE

The Mongolians invented lemonade in 1299 A.D.. It was the Mongol Emperors' favorite drink. Lemonade was also the most popular basic American drink. It also became popular in Paris in 1630 when the price of sugar fell.

Rich with Vitamin C, "the high concentration of citric acid that gives lemons their tart flavor stimulates the flow of saliva, effectively relieving a sense of dryness." It was noted lemons had a long shelf life.

Made from freshly squeezed lemon juice (suggested 6 medium-sized lemons), sugar (1 cup) and water (about 5 cups), it was recommended lemonade be poured over ice cubes in glasses. The lemons should be smooth, bright yellow and firm to yield the most juice out of the lemons.

Lemonade was said to be "an ideal beverage to serve with foods that have a considerable amount of fat because the acid in the lemon helps to cleanse the palate." It was also mentioned, an effective precaution against colds in winter would be to drink hot lemonade. The effectiveness of hot lemonade in the prevention of a cold was said due to more than its heat.

Lemonade had no fat, no cholesterol but high in calories and sodium.
